Biffle Wins Daytona Pole at “World Center of Racing”
Daytona Beach, Fla. (July 1, 2016) – Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle covered the 2.5-mile famed oval of Daytona International Speedway in 46.643 seconds (192.955 mph) to capture the pole for tomorrow night’s Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Race. The pole is Biffle’s second at Daytona (2004 Daytona 500) and the 13th of his career. It marks the 88th Cup pole for Roush Fenway racing and its fifth at Daytona.
“It is a huge confidence builder,” said Biffle. “Winning the pole is all smiles on those team guys pushing the car up there and getting the pictures. They are pumped right now. We will be ready to go tomorrow night.
“Also, this is really a testament to our restrictor plate program,” added Biffle. “Jimmy Fennig heads that department and the improvement really shows when you can come here and have a great qualifying effort like we saw today.”
Biffle is joined in the top four by teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who qualified a Daytona career-high fourth with a lap of 192.320 mph. Biffle and Stenhouse led a group seven Fords that qualified inside the top 15, including Roush Fenway teammate Trevor Bayne, who qualified 13th.
“It is a good day for the Roush Fenway Ford’s,” added Stenhouse. “The Fifth Third Fusion was pretty solid and the guys have been bringing really good cars to the speedways – really fast cars. There are a lot of Fords in the top-12 and that is really cool to see. It is really cool that Greg got it (the pole) for our organization. It shows we are putting a lot of hard work in and it is starting to pay off at every race track.”
For Biffle the pole comes at the same track and event where he earned his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup victory in 2003. Roush Fenway will look for its seventh Cup win at Daytona when the green flag drops tomorrow night. The Coke Zero 400 is set for 8:00 p.m. ET. and will be televised live on NBC.
